A tribal rug in the Afshar manner
Two linked ivory medallions stand against a deep aubergine field that is ruled with diagonal rows of small boteh, the whole given a quiet, ordered rhythm. Each medallion holds a geometric cross of red, green and ivory, and a wide madder border of running motifs encloses the field. The dark ground, the diagonal boteh and the sure geometric drawing read as the work of an Afshar or southwest Persian tribal weaver, working from memory rather than a drawn pattern. A handsome, grounded piece with the honesty of a tribal hand.
Wool pile on a cotton foundation.
