This runner was woven by Kurdish weavers in a village around the town of Kars, in eastern Turkey. Its pattern is simple and direct, woven from memory with bright colours and a freedom of drawing that gives the piece a very personal character. It is a carpet with an immediate presence, and the more one looks, the more its small details begin to attract attention.
What is particularly notable is its unusual size. At 446 by 133 cm, it has both an impressive length and a generous width. In the right place, it could stand out as a magnificent piece, bringing colour and character to a spacious hallway, a long room or the passage connecting different parts of an interior. Its proportions give the design plenty of space to unfold.
Three columns of elongated geometric motifs run through the field, each with angular, curling extensions. The pale outlines keep each shape clear. Their centres alternate between dark blue, ivory and softer pink tones, with little details that change as the eye travels along the runner. Smaller diamonds and rosettes appear between them, scattered like bright little flowers. The repeated shapes give the composition a clear rhythm, while their variations in colour and drawing keep it lively and interesting.
The contrast of the colours is particularly beautiful. Bright pinks, blues and small touches of yellow stand against a wonderfully mellowed terracotta background.
