A small village rug in the Hamadan manner

Three linked medallions run down a warm brick red field, each a stepped diamond with hooked edges, set among cypress trees, little birds and scattered motifs the weaver added from memory. Ivory corners and a camel brown border of running zigzags frame the piece. The single wefted structure, the madder ground and the free, cheerful drawing read as the work of a village weaver from the Hamadan region of western Iran, where such pieces were made for the home rather than the market. Small and full of character, it carries the directness of a tribal hand.

Wool pile on a cotton foundation.
