This beautiful piece was woven in the early 20th century by Turkmen tribes of northeast Persia, using their traditional design. Rows of geometric guls are arranged across the red field, framed by finely patterned borders.
Its colours are all natural. Particularly beautiful is the red of the background, which comes from lac, an insect-derived dye traditionally collected from material deposited on tree branches. It creates a lovely shade of red that brings out the ivory and darker details of the pattern.
Originally woven as a cover for a large cushion to sit on, this is an amazing piece in perfect condition. It is woven in wool on a wool foundation.
