A contemporary sumak by us in the Caucasian manner
Woven in the weft wrapped Sumak technique, this flatweave is built from rows of stepped, hooked panels in ivory, madder, indigo and aubergine, each filled with little birds and stars, the whole given a raised, embroidered surface. A navy border of hooked medallions frames the field, and the weaver has signed it at one end. It is one of our own contemporary pieces, drawn after the compartment designs of the old Caucasian and Shahsavan sumaks, the strongest and most prized of their weavings, and made with the same care. Flat, durable and richly worked.
