A contemporary Kalat sumak in red and blue
The historic town of Kalat, enclosed by the mountains of northern Khorasan, is closely associated with Nader Shah, who strengthened its ancient defences and used the stronghold to safeguard treasures brought back from his military campaigns. The weaving traditions of the wider region form part of the rich and varied textile heritage of northeastern Persia.
This Kalat sumak was woven under our own supervision. We encouraged the weaver to take a different approach to colour, creating a modern look while preserving the traditional technique and the familiar rhythm of repeated geometric elements.
Here, fine red motifs run across a deep blue ground, with small ivory accents defining the borders. The contrast gives the traditional pattern a lively, contemporary character, while the delicate rows of repeated elements reveal the patience and individuality of the weaver’s hand.
It is a small piece with a strong presence, bringing colour, texture and the memory of a living weaving tradition into a contemporary space.
