This piece from our Arasbaran Collection was woven in the mountainous Arasbaran of Azerbaijan province, combining an old Persian design with materials and colours selected for contemporary interiors.
The field features the classic Mahi, or Herati, pattern, one of the most enduring designs in Persian carpet weaving. Mahi means fish in Farsi, a name traditionally associated with the small, highly stylised forms arranged around the central floral motif. Here, the pattern has been enlarged and simplified, giving this old design a more open and contemporary character.
The wool comes from the highlands of Kurdistan, prized for its strength, softness and natural sheen. It was hand-spun in Kurdish villages and then naturally dyed in Shiraz under the supervision of Master Abbas Sayyahi, an important figure in the revival of traditional natural dyeing in contemporary Persian carpet production.
The rich terracotta field, balanced by an ivory border and touches of blue, green and ochre, gives the carpet a strong presence without overwhelming the room. With use, the colours will settle and the hand-spun wool will develop an increasingly beautiful texture and patina.
