A large medallion carpet in the Mashad manner
A deep raspberry red field is covered with a flowing design of palmettes, paisleys and curling vine, gathered around a navy medallion with matching spandrels at the corners. A navy border of palmette and vine, held by ivory guard stripes, frames the whole. The soft magenta reds and the rich curvilinear drawing read as the work of a Mashad workshop in the Khorasan region of northeast Iran, famous for its generous, warmly coloured carpets. At nearly four metres it is a true room carpet.
