A fine floral carpet in the Isfahan manner
On an ivory field, a radiant star medallion opens like a flower at the centre, ringed by scrolling vines, palmettes and delicate Islimi arabesques, with soft powder blue spandrels lifting the corners. The fineness of the knotting and the clear, jewel like drawing read as the work of an Isfahan workshop, heir to the Safavid court style of the seventeenth century. A rust red border of palmettes and vine, held between ivory guard stripes, carries the eye around the piece. Elegant and luminous, it is a carpet made to be lived with and admired.
