A large, fine 50-raj Tabriz carpet from the late 1970s, with an unusual, very soft colour combination and generous open space around its beautiful Shah Abbasi flowers. The fine drawing and spacious composition give this carpet a distinctive decorative character. A 50-raj weave has approximately 50 knots across every 7 cm, equivalent to roughly half a million knots per square metre. At 402 × 305 cm, this carpet covers more than 12 square metres and contains approximately six million knots. Using an illustrative average of 6,000 knots per weaver per day, that represents around 1,000 weaver-days. For a team of four skilled weavers, including a master weaver, this would be approximately 250 working days, or close to a year allowing for holidays. A remarkable amount of patient work lies within this beautiful piece. There is currently a minor stain on the lower-left section of the border. We plan to have it treated before the next photograph; the current image shows the carpet in its present condition.
