This is a very creative piece, with old patterns enlarged and given a wonderfully fresh look. A golden ground carries large blue flowers, coral red details and soft green leaves, with a star-like flower held within a diamond at the centre. The colours are soft and at the same time bright, giving the carpet a cheerful presence.
The weaver has played with two techniques, combining flat weaving with knotted pile. The raised wool motifs stand out against the flatter ground, creating a fascinating texture and giving the pattern another dimension. Woven with hand-spun wool and natural dyes, it has only a narrow edging, allowing the generous design to fill the piece. It is an unusual carpet that can give a room a character very much of its own.
