This lovely patchwork was made in Mirzapur, in northern India near the River Ganges, by joining panels of wool flatweaving. It is a simple decorative piece with a beautiful balance of colour and texture.
Soft ochre, golden yellow and apricot are arranged alongside terracotta and paler cream tones. The squares and rectangles vary in size and proportion, creating an informal geometric pattern. Fine variations in the woven colours give each panel its own character, with the deeper terracotta bringing a little more definition to the softer shades. It is an easy, cheerful combination that could give a room colour and personality without dominating the space.
The woven panels are 100% wool, with a cotton backing added after the patchwork is assembled to make the piece firmer and more stable.
