This beautiful patchwork was made in Mirzapur, in northern India near the River Ganges. Wool flatweaves are cut into panels and joined together, creating a simple decorative piece in which the arrangement of colours becomes the pattern.
Here, rich red, rust and burgundy are brought to life by bright orange squares and rectangles. The panels vary in size, giving the composition a lovely sense of movement. Small changes in the reds add depth, while the orange details catch the eye and give the whole piece a lively, modern character. The woven panels are 100% wool. After they are assembled, a cotton backing is added to give the patchwork greater firmness and support.
