This amazing piece dates from the late 19th century. Such flatweaves are called jajims. They are woven in long, narrow strips, which are then cut and joined together to create a larger textile, in this case an almost square shape.
Jajims were often used as blankets and covers, and they are fascinating for the quality of their wool and dyes. The yarn here is finely handspun, and all the dyes are natural. The close arrangement of narrow stripes gives the piece a beautiful rhythm, with small variations in colour that reward a closer look.
Pieces like this were also used over a korsi, a low table around which the family gathered in winter. Blankets covered the table, with a beautiful jajim laid over them, while the space beneath was heated to keep the legs and feet comfortable.
Today, it could be enjoyed as a cover or table covering, or used on the floor with a suitable underlay and non-slip backing. It is an amazing piece, carrying both the beauty of its materials and the memory of the everyday life it was woven to serve.
