This piece is the work of a very tasteful gentleman from Tabriz. He used to buy damaged antique and old jajims, traditional flatweaves, and carefully unravel them to recover their wool. It was fascinating material, fine handspun wool dyed more than a hundred years ago using traditional natural dyes.
He then entrusted this aged wool to highly skilled weavers in Azerbaijan, creating sumaks of exceptional fineness. The result is a masterpiece of weaving technique, with the depth and character of old wool that recalls the quality of 19th-century sumaks.
In this piece, narrow diagonal bands of small geometric motifs fill the field, framed by a rich red border. The intricate drawing and varied colours make it fascinating to look at closely.
