This gorgeous old kilim was woven by Afshar weavers of southeast Persia around the 1920s or 1930s. It carries a beautiful traditional pattern, with rows of lozenges, hooked forms and small geometric details arranged in a lively succession of horizontal bands.
The lozenges contain stylised eye motifs, intended as protection against the evil eye. Ram’s-horn forms, read as symbols of masculinity, appear among the other traditional shapes. These motifs bring a layer of cultural meaning to a pattern that is already fascinating for its rhythm and colour.
Coral red, ivory, green and darker tones give the piece a lovely balance. There is plenty to discover in the small changes from one band to the next, yet the whole composition remains clear and beautifully ordered.
