A Kalat-e Naderi sumak in colourful stripes
The historic town of Kalat, enclosed by the mountains of northern Khorasan, is closely associated with Nader Shah, the great Afshar ruler. He strengthened its ancient defences and used this formidable stronghold to safeguard treasures brought back from his military campaigns.
The wider region is home to several tribal communities, including Kurds whose ancestors were resettled in Khorasan under Shah Abbas of the Safavid dynasty. Their weaving traditions form part of the rich and varied textile heritage of northeastern Persia.
This piece, known as a Kalat-e Naderi flatweave, is woven in the sumak technique, with traditional geometric elements repeated along colourful stripes. Fine ivory motifs run across bands of golden yellow, deep red and warm beige, giving the composition a delicate rhythm and a fascinating richness of detail.
It is a piece that can decorate a space beautifully while inviting its owner to explore the stories of migration, struggle and continuity behind such weavings. Its charm lies not only in its colours and patterns, but also in the curiosity it awakens about the people who made it, making it a wonderful conversation piece.
