This is an amazing piece of Qashqai flatweaving from southwest Persia. It was woven in two narrow strips, then joined together to form a wider textile. Such pieces are known locally as moj and belong to the family of flatweaves generally described as jajims.
These were multipurpose pieces, used as covers and as decorations for nomadic tents, especially on special occasions. Often prepared by young tribal women as part of their dowries, they were decorated with tassels and pom-poms for ceremonies, particularly weddings.
In this piece, bright tassels and small embroidered details bring a wonderful sense of celebration to the striped and checked ground. The decoration gives it a very personal character, carrying something of the care and anticipation with which such pieces were made.
Woven in wool on a wool foundation, it is a gorgeous and rare kind of piece, full of colour, texture and the memory of nomadic life.
