150112- 226x151cm A soperfine Shish-La Nain. Wool and silk on a cotton base.

SGD 7,300.00

A century ago, Nain was renowned for producing aba, traditional woollen cloaks woven by local artisans. As industrial textiles from Europe gradually replaced these garments in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many workshops faced decline. At the same time, growing demand for Oriental carpets in Europe and America created new opportunities. Visionary entrepreneurs such as the Habibian and Mofidi families brought master weavers from neighbouring cities and, together with local spinners, dye masters, and former aba weavers, established the first carpet workshops of Nain.

The colours originally used for the cloaks, delicate shades of blue, beige, tan, and ivory, became the foundation of the Nain palette and remain among the defining characteristics of these elegant carpets today.

This rug belongs to the prestigious Shishla category of Nain carpets. The term refers to the six-ply cotton warp used in its construction and is associated with finer examples possessing exceptionally high knot densities. With approximately one million knots per square metre, the intricate floral patterns, graceful curves, and remarkable precision of the drawing are achieved with extraordinary clarity.

Painstakingly hand-knotted over many months using fine wool and silk, this carpet exemplifies the refinement for which Nain is celebrated. Its luminous blue palette, exquisite detail, and timeless elegance make it a piece capable of enriching an interior for generations.
