The name Javan Amirkhiz is well known among collectors of fine Persian carpets. In fact, my own grandfather once had a small partnership with him in the early 20th century, producing some of the most fascinating rugs in Tabriz.

This magnificent carpet is a beautiful example of the distinctive work associated with the Javan Amirkhiz workshop. Even without seeing the signature, the unique colour combinations and artistic composition reveal the unmistakable taste of this renowned master designer. His sense of colour harmony was so distinctive that experienced eyes can often recognise his work immediately.

The design itself is highly unusual, featuring elegant floral motifs and stylised peacocks woven into a richly detailed composition. Such elements demonstrate the artistic freedom and imagination that made Tabriz carpets particularly admired for their expressive designs.

All the colours in this carpet are derived from natural dyes, giving the palette a depth and subtlety that only vegetable dyes can produce. Over time, these colours mature and soften, creating a harmonious visual richness.

The wool used in the rug is hand-spun from local fleeces, prepared using traditional methods and simple tools. The sheep raised in the highlands around Tabriz and neighbouring Kurdistan produce wool with long, slightly oily fibres due to the cold climate and altitude of the region. This type of wool creates carpets with a soft texture and a gentle natural sheen.

With its remarkable scale, exceptional materials, and artistic design, this Tabriz carpet represents the refined craftsmanship for which the city has been famous for centuries. It is a piece capable of transforming an interior space, bringing elegance, history, and cultural depth into the room.
