Woven by nomadic Qashqai tribes, this rug reflects a collective memory passed down across centuries. Its stylised symbols are not invented but inherited, preserved through repetition and passed from one generation to the next. While the precise meanings of some motifs may fade over time, the feeling they carry remains intact.

In this piece, the stylised horses stand out with remarkable presence. Among the Qashqai, the horse is a symbol of pride and dignity, deeply loved and revered by both men and women. Here, the horses are depicted with elongated legs, animated and confident, set among a rich field of other ancient symbols, including double-headed animals, enigmatic animal faces, and a central medallion.

The medallion is often interpreted as a stylised tarantula, a powerful symbol of rebirth and renewal, inspired by the creature’s ability to shed its skin through moulting and emerge anew. Together, these motifs form a visual language that transcends explanation, speaking instead through instinct, memory, and lived tradition.

This rug is a true expression of nomadic weaving, representing a way of life that is now largely gone. The wool is hand-spun within the weaver’s family, and the dyes are drawn from natural and vegetal substances gathered from the surrounding landscape as the tribe moves from one camp to another. Such rugs are often woven by young sisters under their mother's guidance on portable horizontal looms. Exceptional pieces like this were frequently made to mark important moments in life, most notably weddings and other significant celebrations.

100% hand-spun wool, natural dyes.
