Khosrow and Shirin Pictorial Baluch Rug, Early 20th Century, 171128-176x105cm

The story of Khosrow and Shirin, recited in lyrical poetry during long winter nights when families gathered around elders, has inspired generations of young weavers to translate this legendary romance into woven form. Such pictorial rugs are rare and deeply personal interpretations of one of Persia’s most celebrated love stories.

The tale centres on Khosrow II Parviz, the Sasanian king who reigned from 590 to 628 CE, and Shirin, the beautiful Armenian princess whose love and devotion became immortal through poetry, most famously in Nezami’s epic. Their story blends passion, power, sacrifice, and fate, themes that resonate strongly in folk imagination.

This rug, woven by a Baluch weaver in the early 20th century, is a striking example of this tradition. Rendered without academic formality, the figures appear stylised and symbolic, reflecting memory, oral storytelling, and emotional interpretation rather than strict realism. The composition carries a quiet intimacy and narrative depth that invites contemplation.

The rug is woven with a wool pile on a wool foundation, displays harmonious natural colours, and remains in excellent condition, making it both a cultural artefact and a compelling decorative piece.
